Clare joins dad in butcher's business

AN Evesham-based butchers is expecting a busy Christmas after moving the business online proved a big hit.

Clare Barry is an online meat company which has been trading since the beginning of this year and enjoyed almost immediate success by building up a list of clients that has now passed the 2000 mark.

Although the online section is still in its infancy, the family run business has been in operation for more than 25 years. Barry Lusted first opened a small butchery shop in Wyre Piddle, which he then expanded to a large factory unit with a fleet of lorries.

He travelled the country selling meat and poultry on outdoor markets for over 20 years before his wife became pregnant with their third child. Barry then decided to scale down the business into two outlets, one on Evesham High Street, the other at Pershore Retail Market.

Clare Lusted, aged 20, has followed father Barry into the business, using her skills in graphic design to create and maintain the website. She admits it is an unusual field for a female of her age to go into.

She said: "I never set out to work for my dad's business but I started there just earning money while I was at college and after leaving I went back while I looked for another job. But everything just seemed to fall into place and as I was doing what I wanted to do in graphic design, I just stayed on.

"The fact that myself and other females work here is certainly popular. I think some women can be intimidated by going into a butchers as it is seen as quite a male-dominated world. We are delighted with the success of the online business and we are now one of the leading competitors in this field."
