Climate change high on public's agenda

WORCESTERSHIRE residents want county councillors to investigate the issue of climate change, a survey has revealed.

The county council canvassed residents on what area it felt was most important for the overview and scrutiny steering committee to look at.

People were given a choice between school transport, obesity, the Worcestershire Hub contact centres, school governors and climate change.

More than 200 people responded via email or online, with nearly a third suggesting that climate change was the key area to look at. School transport was second with 46 votes, followed by obesity, the Hub and governors.

Councillor John Buckley, chairman of the committee, said:"We took these issues to the public and we're delighted with the interest shown.

"What we must do now, having engaged the public to tell us what they think is important, is to engage them again during whatever scrutiny exercise comes out of this. I especially think it's important to involve young people as they seem the most concerned and tuned in to this issue."

The county council is keen to continue encouraging the public to take an interest in scrutiny matters. Residents who want to suggest areas for investigation can still contact the scrutiny team. Log on to www.worcestershire.gov.uk/scrutiny.
