EVESHAM'S old Regal Cinema is the subject of a new book to be officially launched at Evesham Library later this month.
In his latest book local author and chairman of the Malvern Writer's Circle, Rob Hemming, has attempted to capture all the magic and awe the building inspired before its recent slide into oblivion, and hopes any extra interest could mark a turning point in the building's fortunes.
Mr Hemming said: "The old Regal picture house, now a dilapidated, sad sight at the heart of Port Street has been one of those very important places in the lives of four generations of local people who climbed her marble stairs, myself included.
"She represents a most glamorous and frivolous piece of social history and it has been my great privilege over the last two years to research and write her story.
"Along the way I have encountered many helpful characters who have provided me with scores of photographs, historical information and hilarious anecdotes, and as a writer I worry that I may never again find a subject as enjoyable to put on paper.
"It is also an appropriate time to publish this book with the old building seemingly teetering on the brink of oblivion, and I am optimistic that SHAZAM! could encourage the current owner into initiating its revival."
SHAZAM! The History of a Regal Cinema - Everyone's Theatre of Dreams will be launched from Evesham Library on Saturday, May 17 from 9.30am - 2pm, and will be attended by local MP Peter Luff, Mayor of Evesham Alan Booth, plus other dignitaries.
