WHEN the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) announced plans to build a series of eco-towns across the country, developers were quick to respond.
Within a few months they had received a wide variety of suggestions, 57 in all, which were later reduced to a shortlist of 15.
That process saw the disappearance of a scheme mooted for the old Throckmorton airfield, to the relief of local residents.
advertisement But another proposal, straddling the administrative areas of Wychavon and Stratford district councils, remained under consideration.
Developers St Modwens and the Bird Group proposed a development of 6,000 new eco-homes, with a new school, shopping facilities and business park in a self-contained village at the former Long Marston army base - just eight miles from Evesham and on the edge of the north Cotswolds.
