THE last of the pre-cast concrete cell blocks for HMP Long Lartin’s new wing extension have now been delivered.
The blocks, that required a police escort during transportation along the roads due to their size, arrived at the prison on Friday.
According to prison officials the project is on schedule with contractors working towards a handover date of April 2009.
Spokesman Mary Allard said: “Once the new wing is handed over there will be some work to carry out locally by the prison in readiness for occupation.
“The plan is to begin moving prisoners into the accommodation by July 1, 2009.
“There is already a rolling programme of recruitment for Operational Support Grades and the prison will be looking at other areas of recruitment between now and the opening of the new wing.”
