THE first of 10 plays bringing to life the memories and family histories of women from the Vale of Evesham will be broadcast on BBC Hereford and Worcester next week.

The short dramas, which begin to go out on the air from 11am on Monday (6), are based on oral history interviews recorded during the last 12 months and cover every aspect of the women’s lives.

Monday’s play, On The Land, is a typical story of the camaraderie and humour found during relentless hours of picking sprouts and onions in the fields of local farms.

The rest of the series, which include tales about pig killing, wash-day, courting and working in Beach’s jam factory, will follow each week day at 11am until Friday, October 17.

The plays have been eagerly awaited by the local amateur cast including six youngsters from Fladbury First School and six teenagers from Evesham High School.

“It was great fun and very rewarding” said oral history producer Julia Letts. “To hear the original interviews come alive in the hands of the cast was a wonderful experience.”

Members of the public can now listen to the original oral history interviews at Evesham Library on Oat Street.
