PERSHORE College is preparing to hold its first Apple Day.

The event will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday, October 18. The cost is £7 for Royal Horticultural Society members and £8.50 for non-members.

The day will start with a lecture on the history of the apple and how to identify the many varieties. During the event, the plant centre will put on a display of apples with advice on suitable trees to choose for those planning to grow their own. The RHS Midland Fruit Group will also be attending.

Pershore College produces its own apple juice which won the best fruit juice prize at the Worcestershire Cheese and Wine Fayre in August.

Horticultural lecturer John Edgeley said “Apple Days have been going on all over the place for a few years and we thought we’d have one here for once.”

Richard Toft, lecturer in food and drink, said: “Our commercial orchard has all the main English varieties: Cox; russett; bramley and Worcester. For Apple Day we will also be getting in as many different varieties as we can.”

For tickets and information, call the RHS centre at the college on 01386 554609.

People interested in apples may also want to find out more about special tree pruning and apple juice making. Details on short courses run at the college can be obtained from Jill pearson on the same number.
