AN Evesham postmistress will close the doors of the post office that has been in her family for generations for good on Monday.
Pearl Bennett, of Bengeworth Post Office, will serve her customers for the last time after more than 40 years’ service before shutting up shop at 1pm.
Mrs Bennett said: “We are all feeling sad. The customers are still very upset. It is still very raw.”
The campaign to save the Northwick Road branch from closure saw nearly 1,000 protesters take part in a march through the town last year.
But their efforts were in vain and Post Office bosses pressed ahead with its closure, which is part of a national programme of cuts backs by Post Office Ltd.
A farewell party has been organised by loyal customers to mark the closure. It will take place at the Mick Sharp Memorial Centre on Monday from 12.45-2.30pm.
Mrs Bennett added: “I think it is very nice that people have gone to the trouble to do this. It is really nice of them. They have done a lot of work. We are blown away by it yet again. It will be very emotional.”
