SHOPPING in Evesham could become safer if plans to reduce the speed limit in the town centre are approved by the county council.
Evesham Promotion Group wants the limit to be dropped from 30mph to 20mph as part of the High Street enhancement work.
The group was concerned the plans did not include a speed limit reduction and will make the request to Worcestershire County Council.
It believes a reduction would make the town centre safer and improve traffic flow.
But town mayor Alan Booth was not so sure. He said: “Anything for better road safety and better traffic flow is good. I don’t know if it will make much difference though. We have 20mph limits in other parts of the town like in Bengeworth.”
The issue was discussed at the group’s last meeting in April and members were unanimous in its decision.
Chairman of Evesham Market Town Partnership Lew Hammond, who is also involved with the group, will write to the county council following the next meeting of the High Street steering committee on Wednesday, July 1.
He said: “I would welcome it. It would help the traffic flow.”
The start of the enhancement work has been delayed due to the county council elections as councillors have to agree to release the funding for the project to go ahead.
Mr Hammond said he is expecting to get the green light at the start of July and receive the schedule for the work.
The speed limit in Pershore’s town centre was reduced from 30mph to 20mph following its high street enhancements.

At times you can queue from the train station all the way down to the lights on abbey bridge, bumper to bumper and at speeds not in excess of 5mph, the speed limit could be 5, 10, 20, 30, or even 60 and it wouldnt make a blind bit of difference.
As for improving traffic flow well thats just laughable with a traffic system that doesnt move anyway!
Schemes like this are nearly always thought about by someone or a team of somebodies who sit behind a desk all day and have absolutely no idea what goes on outside there very windows.
Pershore is in the exact same situation, cars still parked on both sides on double yellow lines, after the high street was narrowed, which makes getting through the town even worse than before.
I just think that this is another waste of taxpayers money and that the money would be far more wisely invested in something that is actualy needed, or wanted, why are we never asked, just told??
