ANGLERS deliberately ignoring restrictions on Evesham’s riverside could cause under-14s and disabled people to miss out on the town’s prime fishing spots.
Evesham and District Angling Association is working with Wychavon District Council to tackle illegal fishing in Workman Gardens where at present only disabled people and under-14s can fish with a licence.
Dave Packwood, match secretary for the association and owner of the Bait Box on High Street, said if anglers continued to flout the restrictions it could lead to a ban on fishing from the gardens.
“If these restrictions are flagrantly breached there’s a distinct possibility the offer to fish there could be rescinded,” he said.
“The restrictions are there for everybody’s benefit really. It’s to protect the fishing.”
Mr Packwood added there could be plans in the future to extend the Workman Gardens restriction to under-18s and OAPs.
Anglers are also restricted at Abbey Park and Waterside Gardens where no fishing is allowed but day tickets are available for Corporation and Crown meadows.
Night fishing is prohibited in all areas.
Under the partnership, bailiffs from the association have the right to ask anyone not eligible to fish on the riverside to leave. Anyone who refuses may be reported to the police which could result in a summons for breach of the peace.
Anyone wishing to fish at Workman Gardens needs to supply two passport photos and pay a £1 administration fee for a licence, which is available from the Bait Box. For more information call Mr Packwood on 01386 442955.
