Festival of music hits right note

A PROMS style concert provided a fitting finale to a five-day long celebration of music in Evesham.

The final night of the Evesham Festival of Music on Sunday saw flags waved along to favourites including Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem in a packed All Saints’ Church.

The festival began last Wednesday with a dedication service in St Lawrence’s Church followed by the opening concert in All Saints Church with Marcel Zidani, Avonbank Band, the Festival Chorus and the final of the town’s young musician of the year contest. It was won by flautist Clare Heneghan who was presented with the winner’s plaque sponsored by the John Martin Charity and prize money.

The following night, pupils from Prince Henry’s, Evesham High, Bredon Hill Middle, Blackminster Middle and Simon de Montfort Middle schools put on an evening of entertainment at the Arts Centre.

Friday’s Brass and Voices performance at the Methodist Church welcomed Celebration Reed and Brass Band, Vale Harmony Barbershop and Vale Connection Ladies Barbershop Chorus to the stage.

Fringe events took place at venues throughout Evesham on Saturday including a madrigal recital by Musyck Anon in St Lawrence Church and various performances around town.

Frances Smith, chairman of the festival, said: “The festival was a great success and thanks go to all those who helped make it so – especially the festival committee and the Rotary Club of Evesham.

“Congratulations to all who took part, particularly in the young musician of the year competition.”
