SHEEP breeders from the Cotswolds were among the winners at the Royal Show, which opened at Stoneleigh on Tuesday.
The show is the last after 169 years and exhibitors turned out in force to take part in the historic occasion.
In the Cotswold sheep ring, Steven Parkes from King George’s Field, Stow, and Derek Cross of Church Westcote, near Chipping Norton, swept the board. Mr Parkes won with his two-shear ram, shearling ram and ram lamb, while Mr Cross took the awards for two-shear ewe, shearling ewe and ewe lamb. His two-shear ewe was the best Cotswold sheep with Mr Parkes; two-shear ram runner-up.
Poppy Godwin, of Fosseway Farm, Moreton, was third with a Zwartbles shearling ram, fifth with a ram lamb, and fourth and sixth with two shearling ewes.
In the Simmental cattle ring, Boddington Estates, Tewkesbury, continued its run of success. Sterling Krumpets Roxanne, winner of the 2004-5 cow class, was best senior cow, champion female, Simmental champion of the opposite sex, missing out on the supreme champion from the same herd, Sterling Viking 2nd, the champion male, winner of the 2007 bull class.
