Vale towns win host of awards

PROJECTS aimed at bettering the Vale’s market towns have won prestigious recognition at the West Midlands Market Town Awards.

Pershore’s new Avon Meadows Community Wetland and Evesham’s Healthy Future project were both named top in their categories at a recent ceremony.

The 20-hectare wetland was designed with the help of local residents and provides many benefits to the community by treating storm water, assisting in flood alleviation and providing a safe habitat for wildlife.

The Healthy Future project uses the natural and built environment the address social, mental and physical health issues in the town and includes forest schools, a walking group, fully accessible petanque courts and a cardiac rehabilitation unit.

Meanwhile, Abbey Parks in Evesham and Pershore and Workman Gardens in Evesham have all been awarded Green Flag status.

TV presenter and wildlife expert Michaela Strachan presented the awards, which recognise green spaces and parks that are safe, well maintained and have a strong involvement with the local community, to Wychavon District Council representatives.

This is the fifth year Evesham’s Abbey Park has achieved the status, the third year for Workman Gardens and the second year for Pershore’s Abbey park.

Lynn Stevens, parks officer at Wychavon, said: “We are delighted with the awards as they once again show how committed we are to providing high quality parks and open spaces for our residents to enjoy.”
