Pershore pupils travel to Belgium in Remembrance trip

PERSHORE High School pupils laid poppy wreaths on behalf of the Royal British Legion during a visit to Belgium during the recent half term break.

The Year 10 and 11 students made the trip to visit World War One battlefields, taking with them two wreaths from the Pershore branch of the legion.

One wreath was laid at the memorial to the soldiers of the Worcestershire regiment in the village of Gheluvelt, where it was involved in an important counterattack against the advancing German army in October 1914.

The Worcestershires lost more than 100 men that day, but their actions prevented a major German breakthrough and avoided the necessity for a general retreat by the French and British armies.

Students later travelled to the town of Ypres where they attended a moving ceremony which has taken place at the Menin Gate since 1929.

Sherwood Foresters, the Lord Mayors of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire were in attendance, and at the end of the ceremony children laid the second wreath alongside the many other tributes to the fallen.
