FIENDISH friends from an Evesham hairdressers helped raise funds this Halloween to buy a local disabled boy a specialised bike.

Staff from Unity Hairdressers in Market Square donned their ghoulish garments on Saturday and set about serving their customers while donating £1.50 from every cut to Jake Hawkins, aged eight, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

Jake is well known to staff at the hairdressers as his mum, Emma, regularly takes him there to have his hair cut.

Barber and part-owner Kelly Stephens said: “We have been cutting Jake’s hair for about 12 months now so we have all got to know him.

“We try to do something for a different charity every year, and this year we wanted to do it for someone we knew. It was a bit more personal.

“We managed to raise £117, and I’d like to thank all our customers and staff.”

Jake’s condition means he has great difficulty using his arms and legs and he has limited co-ordination.

The specialised bike, which costs £4,000, will be moulded to his body allowing him to ride along in it safely.

Jake’s mum, Emma, said: “I think what they are doing to help is brilliant. They are such a good bunch.

“The bike will mean Jake can come out with his family and friends and join in. It will be great for him as he has never really had that chance before.”

Emma is also holding a charity evening at the Evesham Working Men’s Club on New Year’s Eve this year.

Tickets cost £10 for adults, £2.50 for children, with all proceeds to go towards Jake’s bike fund.
