Pedalling to London for climate change demonstration

CYCLISTS from Evesham are preparing to peddle 100 miles to London next month to join a demonstration outside Parliament in support of a global deal on climate change.

The demonstration, also known as ‘The Wave’ because demonstrators will all be wearing blue, is being organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition made up of more than 100 charities, environmental and political groups and campaigners.

Tens of thousands of people from all walks of life are expected to join in the demonstration on December 5 by surrounding the House of Commons to ‘create a wave of movement around the seat of government’, and drive home to politicians just how important it is to reach targets at the forthcoming Climate Change Treaty in Copenhagen.

Robin Walker, from Evesham, will be one of the local cyclists making the journey.

He said: “100 miles is a long way to ride, it won’t be easy, but we believe it is worth the effort to show our support.

“We are not eco-warriors, but we are acutely aware of the challenges of peak oil and climate change, and the need for global agreement to urgent action.”

The cyclists will set off at 6am and follow a scenic route through the Cotswolds and Chilterns, arriving at Grosvenor Square at about 1pm, then marching to surround Parliament at 3pm.

If any other cyclists would like to join them they should e-mail Robin Walker at rwoffenham@gmail.com.

For those who wish to support The Wave but are not feeling so energetic, there may still be seats available on the coach organised by the Evesham Vale Transition Group.
