Cash injection to boost Christmas trade

TOWNS in Wychavon are to get an early Christmas present in the hope of boosting Yuletide trade.

The £10,000 grant from the County Economy Action Group will help pay for several festive events in Evesham, Pershore, Droitwich and Broadway, such as light switch-ons, festive markets and street entertainment.

Trish Haines, chief executive of Worcestershire County Council and chairman of the action group, said she hoped the move would help to keep trade within the district.

“We realise how important it is for our local businesses that shoppers spend their money within the county, rather than going to shopping centres elsewhere,” she said.

“The action group is determined to do everything it can to help the local economy at this important time of year and we're hoping to create a brighter Christmas for everyone by working together, and supporting some of our great local shops.”

The action group is a partnership of local and national organisations committed to tackling the effects of the recession at local level.

Its members include includes district councils, the Chamber of Commerce, Jobcentre Plus, Business Link, Community First and the University of Worcester.
