Looking for a new challenge for 2010?

ANYONE looking for a new challenge for 2010 may want to consider working as a volunteer for Hereford and Worcestershire Fire Service.

The service is asking for people interested in becoming a Community Safety Volunteer to get in touch with them. The new programme launches this month in South Wychavon as part of a pilot project.

Volunteer co-ordinator for the fire service Carol Walmsley and colleagues will be in Evesham’s Riverside Shopping Centre on Saturday (9) from 10am - 2pm as part of the launch campaign.

She will be looking to encourage people to get involved, offering more advice and information, and answering any questions people may want to ask before considering becoming a volunteer.

Volunteers will help to support existing staff in a variety of safety activities, such as promoting safety awareness at local public events and accompanying retained (part time) crew members to carry out home safety checks.

Mrs Walmsley said: “As a Service we see the importance of giving out safety advice to our local communities. We attend hundreds of events throughout the year but we know that our operational firefighters are busy training and attending emergency calls.

“Therefore it would be great to work with volunteers who wish to give something back to their community by supporting us in our work. Effective safety awareness can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Volunteering activities will take place during the day, in the evening and at weekends. Volunteers will receive comprehensive training for all the activities they undertake, with the opportunity to develop further skills and experience within their roles.

Following the Wychavon pilot scheme it is hoped that the volunteer programme will roll out across Herefordshire and Worcestershire in Autumn 2010.
