Crowds step out to enjoy Badsey Flower Show

BADSEY was brought to life with a flourish on Saturday when the village came together to host its annual flower show.

Villagers welcomed visitors for the Badsey Flower Show where they were entertained with all manner of stalls and attractions. One of the main events was the strongman show from The Mighty Smith as well as dog shows, children’s face painting and delicious refreshments.

Meanwhile, The Badsey Society used the event to launch its new project looking into the history of market gardening in the village. The group has been given a grant of £21,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the ‘The Last Market Gardener.’ The grant allows the group to find out more about Badsey’s market gardening heritage, from now until July 2012.

Project manager Maureen Spinks said there was a huge amount of interest in the market gardening exhibition and many people responded to the request for photos and documents relating to their ancestors who were market gardeners.

“A hundred years ago, around 80 per cent of households in the village were engaged in market gardening, but that is not the case today. That is why it is so important to capture this unique period in Badsey’s history before it is too late and the last market gardener has gone for good.”
