volunteers have given their time to help scrub away 40 years of dirt and grime from The Regal Cinema in Evesham.

The community clean-up event was attended by an army of helpers intent on wiping away the last remaining signs of the cinema’s derelict past while helping to prepare the Grade II listed property for the next phase of developments.

Project manager Laurence Wiper was full of praise for those who helped: “The cleaning event made a massive difference and about one third of the wall space is now ready for painting, which isn’t bad for one day.

“If we didn’t have these volunteers to help us we would be looking at a fortnight’s worth of work. There was 40 years of nicotine to come off. I, and everyone else involved in the restoration of The Regal, am indebted to the help we receive from volunteers, not just last Thursday but throughout the project. It would not be possible without them.”

He added: “The next thing we are looking at is completing the lift shaft ready for the installation of the lift. We are about a week away from that.” The event was sponsored by Ecover which supplied the cleaning materials and protective clothing.
