THE wife of an elderly man who is recovering in hospital after being hit by a car in Pershore High Street has spoken of her gratitude at the support she has received.

Wendy Perks, whose husband Tony was involved in the collision last Friday, said she was counting her blessings after the hospital said he was now on the way to recovery.

Mrs Perks said: “He has lots of injuries but it was an absolute relief that it was not more serious, and he is recovering now. He is so bright and cheerful and positive, and has been all the way through.

“I cannot tell you how much support I have had from friends, family and neighbours. I have had cards, letters and prayers from so may people, and I am so grateful.”

Mr Perks, who is in his 70s, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road near the town hall at about 9.20am.

Pat Warton, who works in the Pplumz toy shop, said: “I was on the computer with my back to the window when I heard a bang.

“When I looked out I saw an elderly gentleman lying in the road.

“I noticed the windscreen of the car that hit him was damaged but couldn’t see much more because there were quite a lot of people who had gathered round. I was quite shaken up by it.”

Mr Perks had sustained a head injury and a broken leg. He was treated at the scene by a crew from West Midlands Ambulance and a doctor from the Midlands Air Ambulance, who arrived by car because of the fog.

He was taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the High Street was closed for about 20 minutes. A hospital spokesman said this week that Mr Perks was in a “stable” condition.

Pershore policeman PC John Hunter said: “No-one has been arrested in connection to this incident and investigations are still ongoing.”

Witnesses should contact investigating officer PC Steve Elcocks at Pershore by calling 03003 333000.
