River Festival is coming to Pershore town

PERSHORE is adding another event to its busy summer calendar next year with the town set to host its first River Festival.

The event, due to be held on July 14 and 15, will hope to enjoy similar success to the Stratford and Evesham festivals and add to Pershore’s appeal during the summer.

The theme will be nonpowered river craft, including dragon boat racing, canoeing and bell boating.

The festival is planned to run between the Riverside Youth Club centre and the Wyre Mill Club and local pubs including the Angel, the Brandy Cask and the Star Inn, which have access to the river, are getting involved.

Pershore town councillor Richard Grantham, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It’s going to be a family-based festival, which should bring trade into the town.

“There will be canoe racing, dragon boat racing, demonstrations from the Pershore Sea Cadets and, hopefully, an illuminated barge and boat procession on Saturday night.”

Councillors supported the festival and approved the use of King George’s Field where stalls will be set up alongside a fair.

Avon Navigation Trust general manager Clive Matthews said: “We hope there will be 60 to 70 boats booked to moor up at the festival site. It will promote Pershore around the waterways network and draw boaters onto the Avon.”
