TWO Vale teenagers will be reaching for the stars after making it through to the final of the national Open Mic UK competition.

Both Jess Dixon and Giles Potter wowed judges at the semifinals in Bedford on November 27 and will now battle it out against each other and more than 20 other finalists at the O2 in London on January 21.

Jess, from Badsey, works at Costa Coffee at Tesco in Evesham.

Her mum Rachael, said the 18-year-old was nervous at first but then really got into the performance and is looking forward to the final.

Rachael said: “She sang Rolling in the Deep by Adele. She thought the wait was nervewracking but when she was up there she was really comfortable and owned the stage.

“The judges said they are looking for somebody natural. She has a great natural appearance and voice and she can’t wait for the final.

Her friends and family are over the moon with her success.”

Pershore High School student Giles, from Norton, near Worcester, will perform at the O2 on his 15th birthday.

His father Geoff Potter said: “For the semifinal Giles sang Hey Soul Sister, by Train, which he rolled into Summer of ’69, by Bryan Adams.

“Giles is over the moon. His success has really exceeded all our expectations, but he is not fazed and he’s really up for the final and can’t wait to get there.

He said it will be the best birthday present he is ever likely to have.”

Both families have booked coaches to the event, which costs £15.
