PARAMEDICS battled to save the life of a man who plunged from a bridge in Worcester city centre this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to City Walls Road at about 3.40pm to reports a man had fallen from a footbridge that leads from St Martin’s Gate multi-storey car park to New Street.

Police closed the road and cordoned off the area by the youth centre and Spring Gardens Medical Practice in order to allow medics to treat the man for his injuries.

Midlands Air Ambulance landed at the bus depot in Pheasant Street shortly before 4pm and crews rushed to assist paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service who were already at the scene.

They were joined soon after by a crew from Warwickshire and Northampton Air Ambulance.

At one point, medics performed CPR on the man in the middle of the carriageway as they battled to keep him alive.

He was then taken in an ambulance to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment shortly before 5pm.

His condition is not known at this stage.

Force Duty Inspector Paul Crumpton said a police investigation was ongoing and the incident is being treated as unexplained.

City Walls Road and the bridge reopened just after 5.30pm.

Currently two Air Ambulance Helicopters parked on the bus depot carpark .
One local one and one from out of county, both of them have engines off at the moment

Any more news? I only heard / saw one air ambulance overhead but the other would probably have come from different direction.

It sounds particularly nasty if two were needed. My thoughts are with those involved.

It would be impossible to fall from this bridge, i find it a bit strange but there is CCTV all along this road and the bridge.
My thoughts are with his family

My question was borne out of concern for the need for two Air Ambulances. Was a road user / pedestrian injured too?

Comments about WN's use of the word "fell" are ridiculous. How else should it be reported at this early stage?

Honest to goodness, there will be folk complaining that a response vehicle left it's boot open next.

I did not mean to cause offence but "fell" The bridge is well fenced and it would be very difficult to fall. I hope he pulls through. It is very sad that anyone should feel so low that they attempt to take their own life. Lets hope he gets the help he needs.
