BEST BIRTHDAY: John Corden and Lesley Waterfield with their show champion Barnevelder hen in the show’s poultry tent. 35123330.
THE owner of a champion rare breed hen said winning top prize was the “best birthday present” he had ever received.
John Corden, who owns the Dutch breed Vera with Lesley Waterfield, scooped top prize in every class and was delighted when she was named show champion.
Mr Corden, who travelled from Warrington to enter the show and had celebrated his birthday the day before, said: “It’s the best birthday present I’ve ever had. We’ve put a lot of work into it.”
The organisers of the poultry section also had plenty to crow about, staging their best-ever event.
Entries at 600 showed an increase of 100 on last year and section head Huw Evans said: “We were very pleased.
We started off in a very small way as part of the main event and have almost doubled in size.
“Now, we are one of the big attractions on the showground.
“This year, for the first time, we are a Poultry Club of Great Britain regional championship show, which adds even more prestige.
“We also have a very good sales section so that people looking for traditional breeds for showing or back gardens are catered for and adds another attraction.”
