A BROADWAY man is hoping to clean up on the charity front when he straps a washing machine to his back and walks across the Malvern Hills.

George Anstey, of High Street, wants to raise £1,000 for two charities close to his heart by completing the 12.2-mile walk on Saturday, October 20.

He has been training for six months and has been gradually increasing the weight of his pack as the washing machine will weigh 82.6kilos.

“I am currently carrying 65kilos in my backpack,”

said the 28-year-old events operative. “I will build this up to about 80 kilos before the actual day. The machine will be in an external frame on my back. The weight should be okay, it is the bulkiness of it which will be pretty annoying.”

After the walk, Mr Anstey is hoping to be able to donate at least £500 to each of his charities, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Malvern charity Experiment in International Living UK.

He said: “I chose CRY because a friend of mine passed away through an undiagnosed heart condition in his twenties. At that time and after I got interested in what CRY do and I thought they were a really worthy cause.

“The other charity is smaller and they aim to bring people from around the world closer together. I went on a trip to Hungary through them and I found it incredible.

“It is the first kind of thing like this I have done. I wanted to do a physical challenge and I saw someone running the London Marathon with a washing machine on his back.

That’s where it all started.”
