OUR guest speaker this week was Brian Ashworth of the Charlton Kings Probus Club who described the outstanding achievement of one man, Lieutenant-General Sir John Bagot Glubb, better known as Glubb Pasha, who was educated at Cheltenham College.

Brian explained how Glubb is a time honoured English name and how he attained the courtesy title Pasha. Glubb is considered one of the architects of Jordan in the Middle East where Brian had served in the RAF.

He spoke of Glubb’s background, schooling and Army career and how he became commander of the Arab Legion that subsequently became the Jordan Royal Army. He transformed the Legion into the best trained force in the Arab world and it became the strongest army during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

Highly decorated with military and other honours, Glubb died in 1986 and King Hussein of Jordan gave the eulogy at the service of thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey.

Glubb’s achievements yet again puncture the often heard excuse “What can one man do?”

Bill Underwood, a former RAF man himself, thanked Brian on our behalf for this very well researched and superb presentation.
