IT was hoped that our afternoon August meeting could have been held outside, but due to the unsettled weather we were relocated to the Village Hall. Marjy Facer, President, welcomed 52 people: members, friends and 14 visitors from our “twin” WI Ashton Keynes. The hall was decorated with flowers and bunting and tables were loaded with delicious fruit punch, savouries and cakes provided by committee and members.

Members were reminded of forthcoming Federation activities, which included a Christmas trip to Waddesdon Manor, Hartlebury on December 8.

A recent guided town walk at Upton upon Severn, had been enjoyed by several of our members and also a visit to the Croome Court walled garden, which is undergoing renovation.

The speaker for the afternoon was Jez Taylor, who is a new resident of Ashton, and is Market Garden Manager on the organic Daylesford Estate. Jez is a real enthusiast for the whole concept and practice of organic production. He brought along an amazing array of colourful fruits and vegetables. At Daylesford they are always trying out new lines to try and keep ahead of the trend. They grow flowers and herbs along with heritage and unusual varieties of vegetables, especially tomatoes. The farm employs a large amount of people relative to its size of 20 acres. They supply chefs; their other farm shops in London and of course the wonderful café/restaurant and shop at Daylesford. It was a fascinating and entertaining talk, and Jez was thanked by Jen Creese.

The afternoon concluded with the special summer raffle and the delicious tea.

Next meeting on September 7, will be a talk by Virginia Meakin “My Life with Alpacas.” Guests are always welcome. Secretary: Judith Hunter 01386 882087
