We were shocked and greatly saddened this week to learn from his son Chris that Dennis Wright had passed away suddenly. Many of us had spoken to him only last week and we all will miss his quiet dignity and compassion. I believe Dennis was the last of our members to have seen service during the Second World War.
We stood silently in memory of Dennis and also of Norma Shead, wife of fellow member Bill, who passed away recently.
Our guest speaker this week was 89 year old Ron Nott of Stroud who entertained us with the songs and music of the 1930s and 40s dance bands including some he had written himself. He accompanied himself on his electric keyboard and demonstrated the sounds and effects that could be produced.
He had been a pianist in a dance band and claimed he was taught to play by a conjurer. Throughout the performance, many of our members were seen singing along and Jim Cox’s foot-tapping threatened Bob Young’s equilibrium.
President George Bourne thanked Ron and congratulated him as a proper piano player of the old school.
