ON Tuesday, November 8, Ian Sadler from Torton near Kidderminster gave a talk on ‘The Dutch Auction at Aalsmeer and 750 Bookshop Nurseries’. Ian has over 40 years involvement with the commercial production of hardy plants in the UK, Europe and North America.

He started in the horticultural trade at 16 and is an ex-Pershore Student receiving his Diploma in 1970.

His main interest is in hardy plants and for 16 years he used to sell at the Dutch Markets. He now produces hardy plants for growers in Germany and nurseries selling through the Dutch Markets.

His excellent detailed talk included some amazing slides of the huge nurseries in Aalsmeer in the Netherlands—for example, one nursery had over one million young conifer plants in individual pots –all planted by hand!

The production of flowers was also done on an enormous scale. He showed us how they were picked one day and in some cases arrived in UK shops the next morning.
