AT the end of May, many of the group and of their some friends enjoyed a trip to Bletchley Park, the once top secret home to British code breakers of World War II and birthplace of modern information technology. There was much to see and learn about the huge influence the work undertaken at Bletchley Park had on the war effort in the air, land and sea. Also, to amaze at what is now recognised as the first modern computer, built by Alan Touring and his colleagues, whose story was told in the film ‘The Imitation Game’.

Back in Harvington at our regular meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, having had our previous month’s speaker cancel at short notice, we were very pleased to welcome for our June meeting a very entertaining speaker, Neil Alcock, from the Vineyard Pottery. Based near Winchcome, Neil is a talented potter who has worked in several different potteries in this country and abroad, before setting up his own studio. He makes beautiful hand-crafted stoneware to sell from his studio, at craft markets and on line, as well as undertaking workshops and commissions for hotels and restaurants. Making his own glazes, the stoneware is not only oven and microwave safe, but also can be put in the dishwasher – a must for everything in my home! He effortless made a jug and a bowl whilst answering questions and telling anecdotes about the art of pottery and his life as a potter. He has generously donated these back to the group, once they are fired and finished, and we will be raffling them with the money going to our charity of the year, the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre at Beckford.

We are looking forward to our Summer Party next month to be held at Ellenden Farm Shop, starting at the earlier time of 7pm and with the Harvington Ukulele Group coming to entertain us. For more information about joining us as a member or visitor, please contact either Barbara (870719) or Ali (870179).
