ENCOURAGED by our Speaker Secretary, Steve Swarbrick, we turned up for our meeting on Thursday 3 August weighed down by our individual collections of unwanted foreign currency.

Steve had urged us to bring them so that they could be passed on to this week’s speaker, Nick Clarke, who collects foreign currency to donate it to St Richard’s Hospice at Worcester. Nick thanked us for this generous offering and said that having made 15 previous presentations he was delighted to be back in Evesham.

With the help of slides Nick spoke about the coach tour he and his wife had made to Andalucia in Southern Spain some years ago.

Starting in Torremolinos, their coach took them to Gibraltar, Seville, Cordoba and Granada. His former teaching experience enabled him to describe the sights they saw and the experiences they had eloquently and with very amusing asides. We heard about the original Arabic name for Gibraltar, why Dundee and marmalade are synonymous, and how Cordoba was once the largest city in Europe.

Phil Bawn thanked Nick on our behalf and congratulated him on his relaxed and amusing style.
