“That was magic” said Richard Dorrell when he thanked our guest speaker this week.

Earlier we had agreed that our meeting scheduled for Thursday 14 September should be cancelled as Dennis Wright’s funeral at St Andrews Church in Hampton would be on that day at 11.30.

Jim Cox then lightened our mood with some delightful advice on how grandmothers should be treated.

With lights dimmed and bated breath, we listened agog to Dr Bob King of Chipping Campden, who spoke about the world of magic. A renowned Atomic Physicist, Bob is a member of the Magic Circle and he explained for us the history of all things magic. He described the early Egyptian magicians, Pharaoh’s serpent and the Decapitated Horse, as well as more recently Houdini, Tommy Cooper and David Blane.

All that was interesting but what really amazed us were his tricks with the rope, the mind reading card trick, five steel rings and a newspaper that turned water into red wine. However, the icing on the cake was trapping Steve and Cliff in giant bubbles.

So we agreed with Richard; it was magic.
