The September 14 meeting of our Club was cancelled so that members could attend the ceremony to celebrate the life of Dennis Wright.
Dennis had been a proud member of the Probus club of Evesham for many years and had been President in 2011/2012.
Hampton Church was packed with his family, relatives, friends, neighbours and fellow Probus members. The turnout, which would have embarrassed Dennis hugely, demonstrated the love, esteem and respect in which he was held.
Leading the service, Mr John Lynch read a moving eulogy that described this true English gentleman who had packed so much into his 94 years. In addition to all his experiences reported by The Evesham Journal last week, we heard more about him as much loved family man.
Given his wartime service in the Merchant Navy which took him to all the oceans of the world, it was touching that For Those in Peril on the Sea was one of the hymns.
After the service wife Sheilah and all her family invited us for refreshments at the Rowing Club’s Boathouse. Donations in Dennis’ memory were made to the County Air Ambulance and to Hampton Church.
