We had a really good turnout for our meeting on Thursday 2 November at the Evesham Rowing Club’s boathouse.

Our guest speaker was David Thorp of Cheltenham, who is retired and coincidentally a member of the Leckhampton Probus Club.

David spoke confidently and lucidly about his involvement, as an Army officer, in various aspects of the 1982 Falklands war. He reminded us of the events leading up to the conflict, the actions taken by the British forces and the eventual outcome.

His primary role had been intelligence gathering, analysis and dissemination and he is right proud of his then ability to unscramble Morse Code at the rate of 30 words per minute.

He has had his book ‘The Silent Listener’ published and he regularly speaks to a variety of audiences, including Cruise ship passengers.

Following questions, Grenville Burrows thanked David for sharing some of the lesser known facts of this conflict with us.

We shall have our annual lunch at the Three Ways House Hotel on 16 November and return to the Boathouse on 23 November when fellow member John Redman of Harvington will share his varied life with us.
