THE Society met on Tuesday, April 15 to find that the scheduled speaker had cancelled at the last minute, but were relieved to see Jan Green who then gave a most interesting and amusing lecture on the Pre-Raphaelites.
This group started in 1848 and felt that art had diminished since Raphael and worked in a different way seeking truth, realism, detail. They wanted their work to tell a story and be true to nature. They used strong colours on a white background. Jan showed us some beautiful slides of work by members of the group, in particular by Rossetti, Hunt and Millais which illustrated their new focus. A very informative and enjoyable evening.
Next meeting is on May 20 when James Kerr will explore Shakespeare's Scenery in photography and on June 17 John Busbridge will talk about 15th century altarpieces. We meet at 7.30pm at the Catholic Church Parish Centre and visitors are most welcome.
