A WORCESTERSHIRE farmer is featuring on a new Channel 4 series about the farming industry seen through the eyes of the younger generation.

Nick Baxter, aged 23, of Peopleton, near Pershore, appeared in the first episode of a five-part observational documentary series First Time Farmer, which aired on Friday, January 11, at 8pm.

Filmed over a six-month period last year, the fivepart series follows the daily grind of young farmers living in the Cotswolds, Herefordshire and the West Country.

Created by the same team behind Made in Chelsea, each episode will meet three new young farmers including apprentices, shepherds and slaughtermen.

Twenty-three-year-old Nick, who works as a trainee auctioneer at cattle markets in Ludlow and Worcester, said he was approached by Channel 4 to appear in the show.

“It was filmed in the summer of 2012,” he said.

“It’s a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the lives of young people in the countryside and what they do.

“Hopefully it will be a very good depiction of young people who work in the countryside and in agriculture. Everybody has the idea that farmers are born aged 45.

“Hopefully, it will give an idea that actually we are normal people and not just the ‘Farmer Giles’ impression a lot of people have. It will hopefully show we are young, dynamic business people who are trying to push business forward.”

Mr Baxter, who grew up on his family’s farm on the Croome Estate before studying agriculture at Reading University, is seen in the programme to be in line to inherit his father’s mixed arable, sheep and beef tenant farm.

But during the show, he is not sure he wants to be a farmer at all and having given farming a go, he decides that he’s just “not cut out for it” and returns to his job as a trainee auctioneer at Ludlow market.
