Important safety issue for both young and old

I fully support Coun Charles Tucker's call for hand rails to be built on the new board walk.

I know the bridge is only around two feet off the ground in places but it has been constructed from rough-sawn, tannalised timber. It will become more and more slippy when wet due to the high level of pedestrian traffic over it, which will wear away what little roughness there is to the wood.

This path is the main pedestrian route to the town centre from the Abbey estate and is very well used. Add to this the inevitable fascination as a new skate-board ramp and the desire of children to balance along the kick-board either side of the bog and we surely have a health and safety hazard.

A simple hand rail either side would not detract from its overall effect and would give elderly folks some reassurance.

I will never condone any kind of water being retained in that area next to the play area. After Saturday's downpour, we've been over the park, which now has large areas all around submerged in flood water.

The bog had stretched so far that it was pouring through the gate, flooding the grass in the playground and amassing in a large pool before pouring down the drain.

Despite people arguing otherwise, there are six drains on the playing field and around the play area, which were installed when it was handed over for public use.

The bog has occurred since the play area was extended over the site of the original pool to Orchard Ditch. The same has happened on the other path by the school. That is impassable again because the temporary' car park has been built right next to the site of the monastic fishing pool and as we all know, water always finds its way home.

Despite battling with our district council, we have lost because it was all signed and sealed back in December without any public consultation. I urge people to be vigilant with their children, especially the under fives who are naturally drawn to water and flowers. The water is foul-stenching, muddy flood water so please steer them away.
