Housing opportunity is lost

THE signs and the publicity for the recent development on the Pershore Road, Eckington promised "Affordable Houses".

This was an opportunity for the young people in the village to take a first step onto the property ladder. The one condition was that applicants should have strong connections with the village which they all had. So here, at last, they had a chance to purchase their own home. This hope lasted for some time until finally the houses were completed. Arrangements were made to purchase when these young people were told that the signs meant "Affordable Houses - to rent only"!

To rent to families on benefit means a regular and secure income paid by the Government. So, once again greed had prevailed and now "affordable housing" takes on another new meaning motivated by self-interest.
