SOME while ago now, you kindly published a letter in which I expressed my disappointment at the then low quality TV programmes. I especially made a point of the mediocre comedy shows with their so called comedians - post the Two Ronnies and Morecombe and Wise period that is!
I ended my letter telling of the time when the superb English/American comedian Bob Hope entertained the then American Army staff in Tewkesbury's Ordnance Depot from it's Garrison Theatre in the closing stages of World War II.
Bob's theme song was Thanks for the Memory, and those of my age group remember well his wonderfully humorous films and radio shows with gratitude for they gave us a very much needed laugh and entertainment during those grim war time days - indeed it's our thanks for the memory too.

Alas! instead of improving our TV has deteriorated even further and seemingly our only comedians now are those appearing in BBC 2's weekly show entitled - PM's Question Time - where those on the left side of the speakers chair (himself quite chortle) are the biggest comedians of all. Mind you those on the opposite side provide a few good laughs as well at times.
But, soldier on eh? for we in Evesham at least have the good fortune to enjoy an excellent library from which we can find good books in which to bury our heads in, walk through our pleasant town's high street, wander along our delightful riverside or drive around the Cotswolds stopping for tea and jam scones in Chipping Campden for instance.
Therefore let us, in Evesham anyway, be thankful for our pleasantly diverting mercies
R GRIMES, Evesham.
