The announcement that all the Post Offices originally listed will close has confirmed what many of us thought all along - the public consultation about PO closures was no more than a PR charade. Post Office Services Ltd has totally ignored its own criteria for population percentages and travel distances. The government was determined to go ahead with these cuts regardless of the consequences for the people of Gloucestershire and the communities that they live in. Government seems to have completely lost the concept of public service.
The result of these closures will be more car journeys; larger queues at the post offices that are open; more inconvenience to the general public, especially the elderly and vulnerable and, in many areas, the loss of an important community focus.
I believe that the policy of trying to cut costs by closing Post Offices is self-defeating. People will use postal services less and less and the final irony is that, rather than saving money, the closures will lead to less business and, ultimately, less profitability.
