100 Years Ago August 31, 1907 THE ratepayers in the Evesham Union will want to know soon when the expenditure on the enlargement of the Evesham Workhouse is to cease. For ten years or so there seems to have been periodical schemes of enlargement, and it would be interesting to know how much has been spent in this way. A new infirmary and new tramp wards have been built, and minor alterations innumerable have been carried out. Now it is proposed to spend another £650 on increasing the sleeping accommodation. It would certainly have been far more economical to have carried out the plan proposed by the late Canon Bourne, and have built an entirely new workhouse.

75 Years Ago August 27, 1932 THE Scala Theatre was packed to the doors on Thursday night when a splendid show was given by a local company, in the form of a revue entitled Late Edition, devised by Mr Sydney Carter, with special orchestration by Mr F G McDowell. The review was produced by Mr Sidney Carter and Mr Sydney Shovelton, and these gentlemen and all assisting them on the stage and behind the scenes deserve to be heartily congratulated on providing a splendid entertainment. The show went with a swing from start to finish, and the frequent laughter and applause which punctuated the various turns testified to the whole-hearted appreciation of the large audience.

50 Years Ago August 30, 1957 THE weekend gales did a lot of damage in the Vale, not only in shaking apples and late plums from the trees, but also in blowing down stick beans. Some pieces of sticks were completely flattened, the beans being pulled out of the ground. The weather has been worse than that of last August, when there was an abundance of rain. The crops all need sunshine now. Runner and dwarf beans, dangling in the mud, rapidly rot unless they are kept well picked, and picking is a very wet business among the soaking foliage. Growers with corn crops have been frustrated by the delays in harvesting. The grain has barely dried out when the next shower has arrived. Weeds have been especially prevalent among corn this time.
