100 Years Ago September 14. 1907.

BEAUTIFUL weather prevailed on Wednesday afternoon when the range of the newly-formed Miniature Rifle Club, which has been provided in the Crown meadow, was opened by Mr E C Rudge. The range comprises a stop butt and a firing point, provided at a cost of £29 5s. It is proposed for the present to have a range of only 25 yards and when members have become proficient at this distance the range will be increased to 50 yards and eventually to 100 yards. The range will be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1 pm till dusk and Sergt-Instructor Walker will superintend the shooting. Mr Rudge said he was pleased to see such a large attendance and he only trusted that those who were there would show their practical interest by becoming members.

Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the consecration of St Peter's Church, Bengeworth, were held on Sunday, when special services took place. It is interesting to recall that the contract for the building of the edifice was taken by Mr Hugh Yates, of Liverpool, for £4,000. On Tuesday, 24 October, 1871, the foundation stone was laid by the late Lord Northwick. The church, which seats 450 persons was incomplete in several important particulars when the ceremony of consecration took place on Wednesday, September 4, 1872, but the date of August 1 had been guaranteed as being the limit needed to complete the contract. A roof had to be hurriedly improvised shortly before the ceremony.

50 Years Ago September 13, 1957 Evesham Town Council have been outbid for the purchase of Mr S J Grove's Avon Bridge tea rooms and boat business, it was reported at Wednesday's meeting of the General Purposes Committee. The Town Clerk (Mr N F Davies) stated that in spite of every effort by the sub-committee appointed to negotiate with Mr S J Grove, the business has been sold to a private purchaser. The possibility of acquiring the Avon Bridge business was first considered in March, the Town Clerk said, following an offer by Mr Grove at a figure then named. A sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Alderman Mason and Councillor Hodges was appointed and met on several occasions. The principal difficulty was that the council had no statutory powers to own or operate the boats.
