100 Years Ago September 21, 1907 THE committee of Evesham Town Council, which has in hand negotiations for the presentation of a wedding gift to Princess Louise of Orleans, has succeeded in obtaining the services of Mr Alfred Parsons, ARA, to paint a picture of Wood Norton and the surrounding district. No better selection could have been made, for Mr Parsons is certainly one of the most prominent artists in England for this class of work, and in addition to this he knows the district. Mr Parsons will interview the committee, when the final arrangements will be made. An appeal for subscriptions will shortly be issued and it is not anticipated there will be any difficulty in raising the necessary funds, especially as the services of such an accomplished artist have been retained.

75 Years Ago September 24, 1932 IT was decided at a meeting on Monday evening to revive Pershore Choral Society, which has only been disbanded for a few months. This decision was arrived at at a gathering convened at the Vicarage, and presided over by Dr R H Murray (Vicar of Pershore) who was supported by a satisfactory number of sympathisers with the project.

Dr Murray remarked that he was encouraged by the good attendance, it being very different from the week previous, when there were only a few enthusiasts present and the meeting had to be adjourned. It had been suggested, continued the Vicar, that a society should be formed to perform only sacred music, secular music being fairly well catered for by Miss Fanny Stephens and Mr W Sumner.

50 Years Ago September 20, 1957 IN an effort to put the finances of the Evesham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society on a more favourable footing, the annual subscription is to be raised from 10s. to £1.

This was decided by an overwhelming majority at the annual meeting of the society, held at the Rose and Crown Hotel, Evesham, on Wednesday, after the treasurer had reported that the financial side had become "a matter of some concern" to the society. An amendment that it should be 15s. for under- 21s was defeated. In his report, the treasurer, Mr Eric Wright, said that all they actually had left was £70. "We have got to increase takings at our productions and cut down on costs," he said. "This is the biggest meeting we have had for some years, so I am convinced we can do it because obviously there is enough interest here."
