100 Years Ago October 19, 1907 THE dinner in connection with Evesham Rowing Club, which was held in the town hall on Wednesday evening, served a two-fold purpose. It enabled the inhabitants of Evesham to congratulate the club, and particularly the members of the junior crew, upon the successes which have been achieved, and also to meet in friendly conclave and talk over the affairs of the borough. Of recent years there have been far fewer social gatherings of this kind than was the case in the past, and this is a matter of regret, for it is often of considerable benefit to members of the town council to hear what their constituents think of their conduct of the business of the borough.
75 Years Ago October 15, 1932 COMPLAINTS of the discontinuance of certain bus services in the Pershore district were heard at a meeting of the District Council on Tuesday. Mr G K Stephens said that he understood the Midland Red Bus Company had a monopoly. They had discontinued the Fldbury-Pershore service and he was unaware of any notification having been given. They had "hounded the little men off the road" in this as well as other districts and he felt if "these luxurious buses" could not be made to pay over country routes, a return should be made to the smaller companies. It was agreed that a letter on the subject should be sent direct to the Ministry of Transport.
50 Years Ago October 18, 1957 DISSATISFACTION was expressed by members of the Norton and Lenchwick Parish Council at a meeting on Thursday about plans for a new school for children from the Norton, Lenchwick and Harvington areas.
"It would be a great pity to close Norton School; it is adequate for the village,"
said the chairman Mr S Byrd.
The proposed school is due to be built in eight years' time, but the site has not been chosen by the primary and secondary school development authority. The cost of the school is understood to be considerable. It may be built in any of the three villages.
