100 Years Ago December 7, 1907 THE inhabitants of Port Street in particular and of Bengeworth generally will learn with feelings of satisfaction that at Wednesday's meeting of the gas committee of Evesham Town Council the chairman and manager were requested to consider as to the improvement of the lighting of Port Street, and were authorised to take such steps as they think fit. For some reason, which nobody can understand, Port Street, which is, after all, one of the principal thoroughfares of the town, has always been badly lighted, compared to High Street or Bridge Street; and there is now reason to hope that the state of things will be remedied. We also suggest to the committee that more light is wanted at the bottom of Queen's Road.

75 Years Ago December 3, 1932 NEGOTIATIONS which have been proceeding between Evesham Town Council and Evesham and Pershore Rural District Councils with regard to an arrangement for the joint use of the borough fire brigade were again referred to at the monthly meeting of the Evesham Rural District Council on Monday. It now appears that negotiations between Evesham Town Council and the district councils have been broken off, but that the Evesham and Pershore district councils are now negotiating with the idea of setting up a joint scheme for fighting fires in the two districts.

50 years Ago December 6, 1957 EVESHAM Town Council was urged by Councillor R G Burlingham, at their meeting on Wednesday, to give their full support to the proposal of the Vale of Evesham Historical Society to excavate part of the site of Evesham Abbey on Upper Abbey Park. The matter arose on the report of the cemetries and parks committee, which stated that the society had applied for the renewal of the permission given in 1953 for the uncovering of part of the site, the proposed excavations to be within an area 56ft, 6in by 43ft 6in on the present turfed area between the cloister arch and the war memorial.
