100 Years Ago January 14, 1908 MR T R Albutt, of Dumbleton, writes: "The Christmas season of 1907 ended in damp, mild weather, much against the prices of cattle and poultry. Work of all kinds was very much in arrears, after the excessively wet autumn. Very little wheat and other crops have been planted in the Vale. Now we are having a very cold snap; the frost will enable the manure carting to be done, but the east wind accompanying the frost has been very trying to outlying cattle. Foreign markets rule the price for all home-grown produce. Everyone would like to see the rural population increase, but better prices will be the only means of doing so with a Government that has the Empire as its leading motto, not class legislation."

75 years Ago January 21, 1933 ONCE more the generosity of the Mayor and Mayoress of Evesham (Mr and Mrs Richard White) manifested itself, when on Tuesday they again gave a Christmas treat to the inmates of the Poor Law Institution and the Cottage Homes children. Their kindness was once more supplemented by the support of numerous donors and gifts, and to them the mayor expressed his grateful thanks. In addition, the master and matron (Mr and Mrs W Slater) and their staff worked untiringly in preparation for the event, and their enthusiastic efforts played a large part in its success. Last but not least the spirit of joviality was introduced by Mr H J Ormerod is his personification of Father Christmas, and his merry manner made every moment a gay one.

30 Years Ago January 19, 1978 PLANS to replace the diminishing number of trees in Evesham High Street received a setback this week when Evesham traders received a letter from the chief surveyor of Wychavon saying he did not know when the trees would be planted. In his letter, Mr W Booy said the trees were the responsibility of the county council. He went on: "While my authority has made representations to the county, I am unable to say, if ever, the trees will be replaced." Members at a meeting of Evesham Chamber of Commerce expressed doubt that they would ever be replaced in view of the fact that holes left in the road after the trees had been uprooted had been covered with tarmac. They are to write to the county council to ask what plans are being made.
