100 years Ago February 1, 1908 THE mayor and mayoress of Evesham (Councillor and Mrs C F Cox) were At Home' at the Town Hall on Thursday evening, when a large number of burgesses and friends were present. The hall, which usually presents a most dismal appearance, was transformed and probably never before looked so well. The walls were completely covered with curtains and the floor was carpeted, while down the centre of the room huge palms were placed. A great improvement, too, had been effected in the lighting of the hall, inverted gas burners and globes being introduced with excellent effect. The mayor and mayoress received their guests at the entrance and subsequently progressive bridge and progressive whist were enjoyed.

75 Years Ago February 4, 1933 AT the invitation of the vicar and churchwardens of Pershore, the Abbey bellringers spent an enjoyable evening on Tuesday, when they were entertained to an excellent supper at the Angel Hotel. The Rev Dr R H Murray presided supported by the four churchwardens, Miss M Woodward, Dr W T Farncombe, Mr Duncombe Gibbs and Mr C Phillips. All of the ringers were present with the exception of one member who was indisposed. After thanking the ringers for their services, Dr Murray expressed satisfaction that the bells were still rung by hand and not mechanically. He paid high tribute to the work of Mr William Need. Mr J J Workman, honorary secretary of the ringers, thanked the vicar for the kind remarks he had made, and acknowledged the kindness of Dr Murray and the churchwardens in inviting them to so pleasant a function. During the evening games were indulged in and the ringers gave selections on handbells.

30 Years Ago February 2, 1978 GARAGE owners in Evesham who have introduced petrol-rationing following three days of panic-buying are worried that supplies of petrol may run out by the weekend. Priority cards have been issued to regular customers by two garages, while two more are restricting customers to between two and five gallons. "It was like a madhouse here on Tuesday," said Mr Jim Howarth, of T & M Dixon's garage in Abbey Road, where priority cards have been issued. "We've enough petrol to last until the weekend but we're not sure about our normal weekend delivery." The crisis is being caused by a national work-to-rule and overtime ban by tanker drivers. "People have gone stark raving mad," said Mr John Valler, managing director of Valmar Motor Company in Pershore Road, Hampton. Customers at Valmar are being restricted to three gallons each.
