100 Years Ago February 22, 1908 THE fancy dress balls held in Evesham this week in aid of the Indian Mutiny and Crimean Veterans' Fund were very successful and will doubtless result in a very substantial sum being handed over to a most deserving object. The mayor announced that he was due to meet the Lord Mayor of London next month in reference to this fund and he hoped to take a very handsome cheque with him from the old town of Evesham, a hope which seems likely to be realised. We would remind those who have not yet subscribed that the subscription list is still open in our columns and we shall be glad to acknowledge subscriptions both large and small.

75 Years Ago February 25, 1933 WIT and humour were to the fore at the annual dinner of the Pershore Police held at the Angel Hotel. In submitting The Pershore Police', Major W H Taylor said years ago there was an old song expressing the opinion that a policeman's life was not a happy one but either this opinion was a wrong one or the police of Pershore camouflaged their outward appearance remarkably well. They were a very happy body of men and he thought one of the reasons for their happiness undoubtedly was that they were officered by such a man as Insp T W Arey. He admired very much the way in which the police of the district raised money for the poor kiddies' boot fund. He congratulated them on their success in the past and wished them further good fortune in the future.

30 Years Ago February 23. 1978 A SCHEME to open up the arches of the Evesham Town Hall and to pave and landscape the existing market square is to go for consideration to various interested parties. Before the scheme can become a reality it will be considered by the Department of Transport, the county surveyor, the Evesham Chamber of Commerce, the Vale of Evesham Civic Society, adjoining owners, Evesham Town Council and Hereford and Worcester County Council. The town hall was acquired by Wychavon under local government reorganisation in 1974 and an original scheme deferred. A new scheme comprising three stages has now been proposed. The first two stages are to open up the arches and to pave the market square. The third part is the removal of traffic from the road between the town hall and the market place, providing traffic lights at the junction of High Street/Bridge Street and Vine Street.
