100 Years Ago March 14, 1908 A MEETING was held at the Vicarage, Badsey, on Tuesday evening to consider the question of raising funds for a new organ for the parish church. The vicar, who presided, said that the existing organ had done duty for many years but that many felt the time had now come when an effort should be made to provide an instrument more worthy of their beautiful church and the worship of Almighty God. The suggested new organ would be a two-manual one, with tracker action for the manuals and tubular-pneumatic for the pedals. There would be four stops on the great organ, four on the swell and one on the pedal organ, together with four couplers and four composition pedals. The total cost of the instrument would be £200 or, if old pipes were used in its construction, £170.
75 Years Ago March 18, 1933 THE Pershore Cricket Club, formed late in April last year, met with good fortune on the field and financial success during its first season and the enthusiasm shown at the annual meeting of the club, at the Angel Hotel on Friday evening, augurs well for the 1933 campaign. The pitch has been relaid by an expert during the winter and a full fixture list for the season commencing with a home match with the Worcestershire County XI. The report of the honourary secretary, Capt N D Fourdrinnier, showed that last season the club played 24 matches, winning 11, losing seven and drawing the remaining six. This he considered quite satisfactory for a start. The secretary spoke of the constant support the people of Pershore gave the club at home matches, there was usually a crowd of more than 100.
30 Years Ago March 16, 1978 EVESHAM could be choked with vehicles this summer as vital repair works to the troubled M5 motorway get underway in April. It is predicted that 20,000 cars a day will be diverted off the motorway during the peak holiday period. Fed into a network of alternative and minor roads, this large number of vehicles is likely to cause serious hold-ups in the Vale of Evesham. Mr V E Jones, county surveyor, said: "Even by exploiting all the alternatives to the full, queueing and delays on the motorway are likely to be extensive and congestion and delays will be caused by traffic diverted to the alternative routes. Evesham, along with Broadway and Stratford, will have to take their share of the overspill traffic while the construction work is going on, he said.
